There goes my 401k

DSC_4319

So I took this picture the day the market tanked about 4%… Little did I know it had a lot further to go!  Needless to say, this was shot down on wall st.  I added a little prop dollar bill so it has some meaning/context (otherwise it would just be yet another stock exchange photo).  When confronted with a familiar scene such as this, I’d always like to throw in something to make it more interesting.  I can think of lots ideas for this shot.  This was shot at 14mm and at an angle to emphasize chaos.

EXIF:

Camera: Nikon D300
Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/4.8
Focal Length: 14 mm

Lights on WEST broadway

DSC_0766

Ok - back from a summer hiatus.  This one was shot down in tribeca around worth and west broadway (looking up west broadway).  I just love the streets and sidewalks down in tribeca.  Everything just seems more spacious and there are never any crowds of people and that’s kinda what I wanted to show in this image.  Here’s the setup:  I shot at dusk instead of night.  I placed the camera on my improvised tripod, the ground, and set the focal length to 18mm to get that wide-angle look.  It took a couple tries to figure out the best exposure time but finally got it at 8 secs.  And of course, since it’s a long exposure, I used a remote to take the picture.

EXIF:

Camera: Nikon D300
Exposure: 8 sec (8)
Aperture: f/22
Focal Length: 18 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV
ISO Speed: 200

Nice Curves

 DSC_3076

Downtown near all the courts, there is this federal building that has these really neat colorful curved park benches outside - You can get some really cool angled shots and the colors are just great!  Just try and be discrete if you get shots in of the building (it actually has some great lines and can also make some great photos) otherwise the security on detail will hassle you.

EXIF:

Camera: Nikon D300
Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/4
Focal Length: 10 mm
ISO Speed: 200

Empire State Bokeh

DSC_2879

I have to thank flickr user *Karo* for the title of this one.  Ok, if your gonna be shooting photos in new york you have to have at least one of the Empire State Building.  Since there are probably thousands of photos of the building why not get a little creative?  There are plenty of opportunities to do so down around Harold Square.  In this one, I was able to fit the sign and the building in the same shot, and threw the building out of focus to create some nice boheh.

EXIF:

Camera: Nikon D300
Exposure: 0.025 sec (1/40)
Aperture: f/1.4
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

Panning in Times Square

DSC_2337

Ok - I know, I know… Times Square?  Not very interesting.  BUT, I think it’s one of the best places to take some great panning shots of cars, bikers, those bicycle-rickshaw things, etc.  The reason is because this place has LOTS of neon lights that add some great color to your background blur when panning.  I’ve tried other places, but for me, this is the place that adds that extra bit of pizzaz to your panning photos.

EXIF:

Camera: Nikon D300
Exposure: 0.1 sec (1/10)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 10 mm
ISO Speed: 800
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
